Coming Soon...

January 1st, 2001 (12:01 am)

  • January 2008: Milestone will be releasing their Sessue Hayawaka DVD featuring The Dragon Painter and The Wrath of the Gods. This has been a long time coming, and it sheds light on someone whose early career, famous as it was at the time, seems to have completely disappeared from general knowledge. For more info, see the Milestone website.
  • October - November 2007: Digital-Meme will be releasing their four-part series of Japanese silents, Talking Silents. The set includes restored versions of hard-to-see features by director Kenji Mizoguchi and Tsumasaburo Bando. Digital Meme is offering a preorder special: 10% off if you order before September 30 (¥4,482 before tax for each DVD). For more information, see Digiatl Meme.
  • 23 October 2007: a double bill for Kino.
    • First, there's the two-disc definitive restoration of Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, with lots of goodies. For more info, see Kino's website.
    • And there's the A Cottage on Dartmoor / Silent Britain DVD. Silent Britain is a moderately interesting if flawed documentary on UK silents, while Cottage is a tale of a stalker and jealous love, which inadvertently offers a fascinating look into how the silent / sound switch was seen by the people who lived it. Pre-order discount available: see Kino's website.
  • 16 October 2007: The National Film Preservation Foundation is releasing the third go-round of its excellent series of preserved films - Treasures III: Social Issues in American Films (1900-1934). If it's anything like the previous two, you should preorder this one. See the National Film Preservation Foundation website.
  • In the fall: besides the Charles Burnett Box, Milestone will be releasing I Am Cuba: The Ulitmate Edition and Why Has Bodhi-Dharma Left For the East?. Check the Milestone website for information on actual dates and such.
  • NOW!!!: Charles Burnett's My Brother's Wedding is running at the IFC Center in New York City. Charles Burnett will be in attendence at several of the screenings, and a Charles Burnett box set will be avalable in the fall from Milestone. For additional information on the screenings and to reserve tickets, go to http://www.ifccenter.com.
