Film Festival, Part III

October 7th, 2005 (09:25 pm)

The NYFF is drawing to a close... I'm enjoying it, but I'm enjoying the smaller firms overall more than the Hollywood prestige just-shy-of-blockbuster films. Some notables have been Bubble, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, and Paradise Now. Beyond the Rocks was flawed, but had a really fascinating midsection. And of course my writing can't keep up with my film going (and sleep deprivation).

I think I'm reaching festival fatigue - last night was Paradise Now and Three Times, and by Three Times, a fairly slow-moving film by Hou Hsiao-hsien, I was just too foggy to follow what was going on. I heard some people talking afterwards about how the relationship in each period (1966, 1911, and 2005, with the couple played each time by the "impossibly glamorous" Shu Qi (wish I'd said that) and Chang Chen) reflects the political realities of the specific times; but I was pretty much in and out of consciousness (and really uncomfortable, to boot). And I didn't get anything to eat until I got home just after 1 am, which didn't help.

I did manage some words on Paradise Now, however, so I'm not completely a schlub.

Well, tonight is nothing, so I'm going to sleep. Very early. 'Cause we're back at it again on Saturday at noon (Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story).
