RIP to the Father of African Cinema

June 11th, 2007 (11:11 pm)

I found out today that Ousmane Sembène - one of the still-too-few voices in African cinema - died on Saturday. He projected images from a world that the average westerner has no clue about, showing the parade of different people, and sexual politics, and just all-around struggle to live that we all go through, shot through an African lens.

I've seen a few of his movies (Moolaadé, Faat Kine) at festivals, and even witnessed a Q and A featuring him once (two years ago?). One of the few ways of getting a first-hand voice on what's happening in different African societies - and he didn't limit himself to his native Senegal.

I hope that other African voices are able to come up after him, and tell their stories, just because he lived. I'm confident it'll happen some way. It already has in some part.
