Movie Moments

April 6th, 2008 (01:38 pm)

There have been different forms of a meme floating around LJ lately (see auggiewren for a somewhat recent sighting), in which you list 10-15 movies / things / tchochkes that you like / love / think about. I decided to do a list of ten memorable movie moments, so I randomly generated a letter (yes, you can do that) and set to it.

This has been pretty educational for me... I knew there were trends in my movie viewing, but I never realized just how deeply they run.

T is for ten LJ meme things...Collapse )

If you'd like to do this, feel free to generate a letter for yourself using the JavaScript below. If the Javascript doesn't work, comment and I'll give you a letter.

Lists , Lists, Lists Again

From dica: Edward Copeland (?) has put together a list of the "best non-English-language films up to 2002", and there's voting going on to find the top 25. Normally the lists idea annoys me, because comparing movies can often be apples and oranges (beyond possibly the technical, just how do you say that Citizen Kane is better or worse than Taxi Driver beyond your own preferences?), but some of the comments I see are making this look a little intriguing. I'll have to carve out some time and take a look.

http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.com/2007/08/choosing-best-in-non-english-language.html

And I've seen 55 (with some additional I'm-not-sures in there) - only two fewer than dica. That can't be right...

National Film Registry Updates

December 30th, 2006 (09:06 am)

The Library of Congress announced the 2006 additions to the National Film Registry today. Quite an interesting - and exciting - cross-section of recent and old, and quite a few silents. I'd like to find that The Curse of Quon Gwon...

What Akira Saw...

November 5th, 2006 (12:00 pm)
thoughtful

current mood: intrigued

I'm reading Akira Kurosawa's autobiography, Something Like an Autobiography. I really like the tone and how he just discusses his life without a lot of added flourish.

One really interesting thing: Kurosawa lists the movies he remembers watching as a kid (his brother was a benshi, and sparked his interest in movies). Looking at the list, I understand a little more about his filmmaking and where he was coming from (I've even seen a lot of them). The dates may be slightly off, since this was put together in later life and he didn't have Japanese release dates, but he evidently did see these movies.

So without further ado, here's The List [1]:

Foreign Oscars

October 22nd, 2006 (04:08 pm)

So here are the official country submissions for the foreign Oscar:
http://www.oscars.org/press/pressreleases/2006/06.10.19a.html

I guarantee that Spain will get a nomination.

Canada and China look like fairly strong possibilities. Mexico might be, except there's some question of just how Mexican the production is (Mexican director, Spanish production). Finland doesn't have a chance, but did it really before Kaurismaki said anything?... And The Netherlands has a Hollywood director as well - although Starship Troopers and Showgirls could be interpreted as, shall we say, negatives. %^D

It's probably safe to bet that Cuba and Iran aren't looking promising - after all, pure merit only goes so far.

Other than that, the field looks pretty wide open.

**********

Strangely enough, Kazakhstan didn't nominate Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan. I wonder why?...

uh-oh, she's been thinking again...

October 13th, 2006 (11:59 pm)

In general, I don't like to make up lists. But I've been thinking about this for awhile, and decided to take a stab at it. So below: my favorite directors, along with a brief explanation why (and no, it's not a fascination with the letter M).

The current Facets catalogue has a list of Palme D'Or winners from Cannes through history which I thought would be a good thing to share. I've added on and filled in some holes from elsewhere. Note: "available on DVD" may refer to the US only.

More information on Cannes is available at their website: http://www.festival-cannes.fr.

At some point I may add more information to this.
